Edward Tucker Jr.1848-1909 Cockermouth Castle
Description
We are offering for sale this lovely, large and subtly toned watercolour by the artist EDWARD TUCKER Jr., who has signed the painting with his pseudonym Edward Arden once in the lower left hand corner and again just below the tree on the left. He has inscribed the painting verso 'Cockermouth Castle'. The painting depicts the ruin of Cockermouth Castle at sunset, standing high above the town, with the mouth of the River Cocker on the right below the bridge, where it joins the River Derwent. The view is somewhat different now as there is a large brewery beneath the Castle. The painting shows the castle and the slopes that it stands upon, tinged pink by the setting sun.EDWARD TUCKER Jr., who was born in Gravesend in 1848, was a landscape and coastal painter in watercolour, who was the son of the well known watercolour artist Edward Tucker Sr. (c.1815-1898). He lived in Bristol, London, Brighton, Ambleside, ending up in Windermere. He was the brother of Arthur T. RBA 1864-1929, Frederick T. c. 1855-c.1935, Alfred R. T. 1849-1914 and Hubert Coutts T. RI, who died in 1921. All five of the brothers being listed artists. He used the pseudonym Edward Arden to avoid confusion with his father. He died in 1909.
Biographical details for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu, although there is some confusion between the father and son.
We cannot give the details of his exhibitions, although he exhibited from 1870 onwards, as due to the confusion with his father we do not know which exhibits were his.
A multitude of auction results achieved for works by both father and son and may be found at artprice, findartinfo, artnet and arcadja although their work is frequently put together just as Edward Tucker.
The painting is mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 5/8" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
