We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist CLARENCE HENRY ROE, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner Clarence Roe and entitled it Lowood Windermere. The painting depicts a view of the Langdale Pikes from Low Wood Bay on Lake Windermere in the Lake District. It is a blustery day, with patches of blue sky, and the lower slopes to the right are tinged pink by the setting sun. There is a white house visible across the lake and there are birds skimming the surface of the water. The Lake District and the Highlands of Scotland are favourite subjects of this artist.

CLARENCE HENRY ROE was born in Glasgow in 1850 and subsequently moved to London where he was a pupil at the Royal Academy. His address was 9 South Crescent, Tottenham Court Road, London. He was a prolific landscape painter in oil, principally, although not exclusively, of highland scenes, rivers, lochs, glens etc. often with the inclusion of animals. He did not exhibit his work in London, but did exhibit 2 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy. There was obviously a ready market for his work without the need to constantly exhibit. He flourished between 1870 and 1909, the year of his death.

His auction results may be viewed at artprice (338 listings), artnet (170), findartinfo (126), askart (72) and arcadja (125). His works often appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle at prices ranging from £260 - £4,800. The painting is nicely framed in a new 3 1/4" swept gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition Very good condition. There are no repairs to the canvas, which is clean and taut. There is no craquelure and only slight stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame is new.
