John Scott RI ROI RBA 1850-1918 W/Colour Monks
Description
We are pleased to offer for sale this humorous watercolour by the artist John Scott, who has signed the painting J. Scott in the lower right hand corner. the painting depicts two jolly monks in their kitchen. One of them is pouring wine into a beaker from a jug, while the other is holding a large slice of cheese. There are two apples on a pair of pewter plates, while perched on the third platter which is leaning against the cheese, is a magpie. The magpie's wicker cage, with its door open, is hanging on the wall.John Scott 1850-1918 was born in Carlisle Cumberland in 1850. He was a genre, literary and historical painter in oils and watercolours. We have been unable to discover much information about his actual life both personal and artistic, but he was a well exhibited and recognised artist.
From before 1881, he was living at the Mall Studios, Parkhill Road, Hampstead, London with his wife Georgina Ellen.
He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1882, a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1885 and a Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.
He exhibited from 1862 and at the Royal Academy ( 20 paintings) from 1872, RI (96), ROI (61), Glasgow Institute (10), Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, (36) and elsewhere at the major provincial galleries.
His oil paintings achieve prices in the thousands of pounds at auction, with the record in recent years being over £10,000 at Sothebys in New York in 2004. His watercolours also achieve high prices with the record being £1,200 for a 14" x 10" at Bonhams in Bath in 2003 and most reaching the middle hundreds.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and newly framed in a nice 1 1/8" bronze ornate frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
