We are delighted to offer for sale this atmospheric autumnal rural landscape by the artist Parker Hagarty, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 91. The painting depicts a rural landscape in autumn, with a farmhouse and farm buildings near to a small lake. The trees are losing their leaves which have fallen over the grassy foreground. This is one of the relatively early works of the artist. Unfortunately, we do not know the location.

Parker Hagarty was born in Canada on 27th September 1859. By 1871, the family had moved to the UK and was living in Everton, Lancashire. Parker studied at the Liverpool School of Art and later at the Academie Julian in Paris under Bouguereau. His sister Mary Hagarty is also a well known artist. He was a member of the Liver Sketching Club in the 1890s and on the Committee in 1881.

By 1891 he was lodging in Cardiff, where he lived for many years. He was a founder member of the South Wales Art Society. He was elected a Member of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1900. In 1901, he ws living in Walberswick in Suffolk with his wife Laura, but returned to Cardiff, where he died in 1934.

He was a painter in oils and watercolours. He initially painted landscapes but later turned to portraits and nudes in landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1884-1916. He exhibited quite prolifically as follows RA 24, RCA 142, Walker AG Liverpool, 131, ROI 5, RI 11, and elsewhere in the major provinical galleries.

His larger paintings like this do not come to the market often, but a 36" x 24" achieved £1,324 in Boston US in 2006 and a 50" x 30" made £1,363 in 2011.

The painting is newly framed in a 4" ornate, swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Medium Oils on canvas.

Very good condition. The canvas has been relined at some stage and is now clean and taut with no craquelure, stretcher marks or paint loss. The frame is new.
