Thomas H.Gibb 1833-1895 Oil Ullswater Cattle
Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb landscape by the Northumberland artist Thomas Henry Gibb, who has signed the painting indistinctly in the lower left hand corner and also signed and entitled it verso 'Ulleswater T. H. Gibb 1879'. Ullswater is perhaps the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District and is situated between Penrith and Keswick. There is a small herd of long-horned cattle on the left bank of the lake and the hills and mountains surrounding the lake are reflected in the water. There is mist rolling down the valley in the background of the painting.THOMAS HENRY GIBB, was a Victorian artist, born c. 1833, in Alnwick, Northumberland, where he lived for the majority of his life. He was the father of the other well known artist Henry William Phelan Gibb 1870-1948. In 1881, he was listed in the census as an Artist and Bailiff of the Alnwick County Council.
He exhibited in the 1880s at the Arthur Tooth Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. He specialised in paintings of Highland lochs and lakeland scenes, often with cattle and animal paintings, often of dogs.
