We are pleased to offer for sale this large oil on canvas by the artist CLARENCE HENRY ROE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner Clarence Roe and entitled it verso Loch Corisk. There is no loch in Scotland with this name, the nearest being Loch Coruisk, however, we feel that the painter must have been confused which he entitled the painting, perhaps because he had only heard it spoken, as we have been reliably informed by a gentleman who lives on the Isle of Sky that this is not a painting of Loch Coruisk. We therefore, unfortunately, do not know the location, but this is a painting of a Scottish loch surrounded by low hills and there is a stag watering at the water's edge.

CLARENCE HENRY ROE was born in Glasgow in 1850 and subsequently moved to London where he was a pupil at the Royal Academy. His address was 9 South Crescent, Tottenham Court Road, London. He was a prolific landscape painter in oil, principally, although not exclusively, of highland scenes, rivers, lochs, glens etc. often with the inclusion of animals. He did not exhibit his work in London, but did exhibit 2 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy. There was obviously a ready market for his work without the need to constantly exhibit. He flourished between 1870 and 1909, the year of his death.

His auction results may be viewed at artprice (338 listings), artnet (184), findartinfo (171), and arcadja (123). His works often appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle at prices ranging from £260 - £4,800. The latest oil of this size to come to auction, sold for $2,000 at Leslie Hindman in the US. He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists. To see further examples of his work, please look on google images.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3" swept gilt frame and is ready to hang.

Medium Oils on canvas

Condition Very good. The canvas is clean and taut and there are four small repairs as shown. There is some craquelure and stretcher marks commensurate with age. The frame is new.
