Description

Please note that any white marks on the photographs are not defects, but light reflecting off the varnished surface.

We are delighted to offer for sale this interesting still life oil on canvas by the artist George Herbert Buckingham Holland, who has signed the painting in the top left hand corner. The painting depicts a lacquered tray with a selection of Chinese objects upon it. There is a large figures of a Chinese elder, a Chinese teapot, a blue and white cup and saucer and a blue and white dish. Around the neck of the figures is a string of beads including some jade. To the left of the tray is another Chinese figurine dressed in traditional garb.

The interesting thing about this painting is that is bears a considerable resemblance, although slightly smaller, to a still life painting by this artist in the collection of Northampton Museum and Art Gallery which is entitled 'The Sage'. Both of the figurines and the tray that are in this painting are also in the painting that we are offering. 'The Sage' was painted in 1927.
