Charles Dudley Tennant 1866-1952 Oil Ptrt.Brenda
Description
We are offering for sale this appealing portrait by the artist Charles Dudley Tennant, who has signed the painting in the top right hand corner Dudley Tennant. He has inscribed the painting verso on the canvas 'Brenda' with his address in Purley, part of which we cannot decipher. The painting depicts his daughter Brenda May, seated in a cream dress, with a blue sash and a matching bow in her light brown hair. She is holding her teddy bear. Brenda was born in 1907 and we would estimate that the painting dates from circa 1914.Charles Dudley Tennant 1866-1952, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire on 18th November 1866, the son of a lawyer. After his father's death in 1880, he was raised by his widowed mother Sarah, along with his five siblings at 16 The Willows, Everton Lancashire. He was working as an artist and landscape painter in the late 1880s and in the 1890s he moved to London with his wife Sarah, who he married in 1899.
He becamea regular illustrator for magazines of the era, including The Windsor Magazine, The Royal Magazine, The Graphic etc. He also produced a multitude of book illustrations in colour, half tone and black and white including many for Cassell's Book of Knowledge and various encyclopaedias. His son Dudley Trevor Tennant was a sculptor and teacher. There are many pictures of his illustrations on google images, many of which are being reproduced.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy (4) and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool (4) between 1898 and 1918. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club). There are a few auction results for his work at the usual sites.
From about 1913 he lived in Purley, Surrey, where he died in 1952 at the age of 86.
