Constance Cooper VPSWA Oil Painting Vase Gladioli
Description
We are offering for sale this very well executed still life oil on canvas by the 20th Century Croydon artist CONSTANCE M. COOPER, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. Unfortunately, the artist has signed the painting at the very bottom of the canvas, where it is invisible when framed. However, we have shown a photograph of the signature. The painting is a still life arrangement of a cut glass waisted vase filled with stems of gladioli in soft colours, with a bronze casket behind it and a porcelain bowl to the left. There is one stem of gladiolus next to the vase. This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we are listing this week.
CONSTANCE M. COOPER 1905-1998 is a twentieth century British artist, who lived in Croydon, Surrey. She studied at Croydon College of Art and was elected to the Society of Women Artists, becoming their Vice President. She was also the President of Croydon Art Society for 22 years. According to their website, she had a business in London employing 23 girls in the design and construction of lampshades for royalty. She was a great supporter of the Scout movement and was largely responsible for the Society raising and donating many thousands of pounds to charities, including the Scouts. At one time she lived at 35 Shirley Park Road, Croydon.
There are auction listings available for this artist on artprice (5 listings), arcadja (9), findartinfo (5) and askart (1). A painting by this artist of flowers in a vase achieved £360 at Gorringes, Lewes in 2001.
