Description

We are offering for sale this large coastal oil painting by the Scottish artist Joseph Sharp, who has signed the painting J O Sharp in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a fisherman working in his small, masted, fishing boat, which is propped up on supports so that it remained level. On the beach in front of the boat, is an array of items, including boxes for fish, buoys, a barrel and some planks. There are other sailing vessels out to sea, as well as a rowing boat closer to shore. There are seagulls wheeling above the waves.

Joseph Sharp exhibited between 1880 and 1910. He exhibited 42 paintings at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and 1 at the Manchester City Art Gallery. He specialised in coastal paintings and marines of a similar size and shape to this one.

He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club). Other than this, we have been unable to find any further biographical details for him. There are a few auction listing for his coastal oils, a slightly smaller one of which achieved in excess of £800 in Germany this year.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" silver gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
