We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely 19th Century Oil Painting by an unknown artist, as the painting is unsigned. The painting depicts the Madonna, holding the baby Jesus on her lap, and looking down lovingly at the two children. Standing in front of her is the very young John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin, who is giving Jesus a kiss. Mary is seated on a stone bench and is wearing a red dress, with a gauzy white veil around her head and a green and gold striped, tasselled wrap.

There are many paintings of this subject and we have looked very closely to see if this is a copy of a famous painting, but, as yet have not found this to be the case. If anyone knows differently, we would be most grateful if they could let us know.

Obviously, as the painting is unsigned, we can offer no details about the artist.

The painting is framed in a pale gilt swept frame with velvet insert, which is not contemporary to the painting, but has some age. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
