We are offering for sale this large oil on canvas by the Victorian artist Nathaniel Hickman, who has signed the painting in red in the lower right hand corner and dated it 86 for 1886. The painting depicts a quiet stretch of a river, with the trees on the right hand bank, in autumnal leaf.

There is little biographical information available about this artist, but he was born in Worcester circa 1861, and, in the 1881 census, he was living in Herefordshire, when his occupation was given as 'artist'.

His most recent auction result that we can find are for a pair on 30" x 20" river landscapes, which sold at Christie's South Kensington in 2009 for £1,063.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3" ornate swept gilt frame and is ready to hang.
