We are pleased to offer for sale this impressionist oil on canvas by the artist CLARENCE HENRY ROE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner Clarence Roe. The painting depicts a rocky landscape with a waterfall gushing with some force over rocks to fall into a small pool and continue through a narrow gully to exit into a larger pool in the foreground. There are silver birch trees to the right of the fall and a mountainous region in the background. This painting is executed in Clarence Roe's own inimitable style but, unfortunately, he has not given the location.

CLARENCE HENRY ROE was born in Glasgow in 1850 and subsequently moved to London where he was a pupil at the Royal Academy. His address was 9 South Crescent, Tottenham Court Road, London. He was a prolific landscape painter in oil, principally, although not exclusively, of highland scenes, rivers, lochs, glens etc. often with the inclusion of animals. He did not exhibit his work in London, but did exhibit 2 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy. There was obviously a ready market for his work without the need to constantly exhibit. He flourished between 1870 and 1909, the year of his death.

His auction results may be viewed at artprice (303 listings), artnet (166), findartinfo (111), askart (29) and arcadja (95). His works often appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle at prices ranging from £260 - £4,800. The painting is nicely framed in a 2 1/4" cream and gilt swept frame and is ready to hang.
