Thomas M. Ronaldson Oil Portrait of a Gentleman
Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this excellent portrait by the renowned Scottish portrait painter Thomas Martine Ronaldson, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner. The portrait depicts an unknown sitter, a distinguished looking gentleman in his fifties with greying hair and splendid moustache, who is wearing a brown three piece suit, with a white stiff collared shirt and tie with tiepin. There is a red handkerchief in his breast pocket Unfortunately, we do not know the name of the sitter.Thomas Martine Ronaldson was born in Edinburgh on 13th December 1881. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and Trinity College, Oxford. He studied art at Edinburgh School of Art, at the Cope and Nicholl School in London and at The Academie Julian in Paris under J. P. Laurens. He won a Silver Medal at the Paris Salon in 1926. He lived in London for some years from 1908 and died on 12th March 1942.
During his career as a portrait painter, he painted many notables, including the artist Anna Katrina Kinkeisen, this portrait is in the National Gallery of Schotland, and the Duchess of Newcastle. There are 21 of his portraits in the National Collection at various locations, which can be found by looking at bbc/your paintings on google.
He exhibited widely 1905-1940, including 26 at the Royal Academy, 42 at the Royal Scottish Academy, 13 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and 18 at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as variously in the provinces.
We would date this portrait to between 1907 and 1915, partly by the style of the clothing of the sitter and partly from the date of the stamp on the canvas and the Ackerman label on the back of the stretcher.
Auction results achieved for works by this artist are available at the usual sites, but the record since 2000 for one of his paintings is £4,500 at Christie's in 2003.
The painting is newly framed in a 2 7/8" ornate gilt frame and is ready to hang.
