Description

We are delighted to offer for sale this original watercolour by the illustrator and artist Evelyn Stuart Hardy, who has signed the painting E. S. Hardy in the lower left hand corner. The painting is entitled 'Grinding Corn in Palestine' verso by the artist and depicts a domestic scene in Palestine, with two women seated on the ground grinding corn in the method of the time. Standing in the stone doorway, is an older child wearing a swathed turban and a striped robe, carrying a swaddled baby. There is another infant crawling on the ground behind one of the women. Both woman are wearing blue robes and white head coverings.

Evelyn Stuart Hardy was born to an artistic family in 1865 in Bristol. Her original name was Beatrice Evelyn Elizabeth Hardy, although it is as Evelyn Stuart Hardy that her work is known. She died, unmarried, in Cuckfield, Sussex in 1935.

The artist was a prolific illustrator primarily of children's books and produced thousands over the years between 1890 and 1922. A very good biography, which we cannot show for copyright reasons, is available on google by putting in Evelyn Stuart Hardy and it is at the top of the page.

She also wrote books and these, and the ones with her illustrations are still extremely popular. Her original artwork rarely comes to the market, but there are 33 listings at artprice, artnet (8), arcadja (7) and findartinfo (3).

The painting is mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 1 3/8" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
