Description

We are delighted to offer for sale this very well executed and large watercolour of an arab street scene by an unknown artist. The painting depicts a narrow alley or street, with tall buildings on either side, some with overhanging balconies with screened side. At the far end of the street is a building with a small dome at its entrance, possibly a mosque. In the left foreground stands a beggar, leaning on a crutch. There are two arab men in conversation further down the alley and a veiled woman with a large bundle on her head, is approaching the beggar.

We would date this painting to circa 1911, as along the back of the drawing board, with prepared watercolour surface by the O.W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd. there is a small strip of old newsprint with 1911 mentioned it. We have been unable to discover anything about this company who manufactured the pasteboard, but it has considerable age and a wonderful logo on the back.

It is a great shame that the artist has not signed the work, as it has been painting by a very good hand.

The watercolour has been newly double mounted in acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" bronzed gilt frame, which suits it very well.
