We are offering for sale this large oil on canvas by the Victorian artist Nathaniel Hickman, who has signed the painting in red in the lower left hand corner and dated it 85 for 1885. The painting depicts a quiet backwater, with reeds and water lillies growing in the edge of the water. There are silver birch trees to the left bank and a tiled roofed barn at the back of the field in the centre background, with distant hills.

There is little biographical information available about this artist, but he was born in Worcester circa 1861, and, in the 1881 census, he was living in Herefordshire, when his occupation was given as 'artist'.

Auction records for works by this artist may be found at findartinfo (9 listings), 6 under N. Hickman and 3 under Nathaniel Hickman, arcadja (5) and artnet (5). His most recent auction result that we can find are for a pair of 30" x 20" river landscapes, which sold at Christie's South Kensington in 2009 for £1,063.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3" ornate swept gilt frame and is ready to hang.
