Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this large and quite rare watercolour by the artist Augustus Burnett-Stuart, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1895. The painting depicts The Temple of Vesta at Tivoli, near Rome, Italy. The temple stands on a wooded cliff, next to the Temple of the Sibyl. Please see photos on google.

Augustus Burnett-Stuart, was born in 1848 and was the son of a Vicar. He lived at Mellifont Abbey, Wookey, Somerset and was an architectural painter in watercolours. He was also a Churchwarden. Other than this, there is little biographical information available, apart from the fact that he was well travelled and painted in Europe, China and the near East. He died in 1896.

He exhibited between 1883 and 1895, a scene in Peking at The Royal Academy, 11 paintings at the Dudley Gallery, 1 at the Glasgow Institute, 3 at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 2 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and 1 at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham.

His work seems to come to the market rarely, although an 18" x 12" watercolour of the Arch of Titus in Rome achieved £520 at Bonhams in 2010. There are 11 listings for his work at artprice and 8 at artnet.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone to complement in acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
