Cuthbert Rigby ARWS 1850-1935 Watercolour Azaleas


Description
We are very pleased to offer for sale this beautiful watercolour by the artist Cuthbert Rigby, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it L 19. This means that it was destined for exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, No. 19. The painting depicts a colourful scene of azaleas in full bloom around a still pool, with a path winding through the woods to the left and some irises blooming to the left of the path and next to the water in the foreground.Cutherbert Rigby, was born in Liverpool on the 14th May 1850. He was apprenticed to an architect in 1865, but in 1872 he became a pupil of William J. Bishop and became a professional artist thereafter. He lived in Southport for a while but moved to the Lake District and lived in several places there, including Kendal before settling in Ambleside in 1906, where he remained until his death in 1935.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, mostly views in Cumberland, from 1875 and was elected Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1877. In 1904, he was a Founder Member of the Lake Artists' Society. According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited 7 paintings at the Royal Academy, 293 at The Royal Watercolour Society and 13 at other London Exhibitions.
He also exhibited 95 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 16 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 3 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 12 at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and 1 oil at the Royal Oil Painters Institute.
He published 'From Midsummer to Middlemas, a West Cumberland Idyll' in 1891.
He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of British Watercolours Artists by Mallalieu, Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child and Graves Dictionary lists his exhibitions in London up to 1893.
There are currently two much smaller watercolours for sale by this artist in a gallery online for £450.
Auction results for this artist may be found at artprice (55 listings, findartinfo (44), arcadja (27) and artnet (7). The record price achieved for one of his watercolours in the last 20 years in £980.
The painting has been newly double mounted to complement in acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" bronzed gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
