Charles J. Adams 1859-1931 Landscape Watercolour


Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this expertly executed landscape watercolour by the artist CHARLES JAMES ADAMS, who has signed the painting C. J. Adams in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a a hilly landscape, with the tallest peak, capped by snow. There are two figures of a man and a woman, crossing a plant bridge on stone piers. The man is carrying a bundle on a stick over his shoulder and the woman is wearing a shawl over her dress. To the right of the bridge is a ford and there is a haywagon pulled by two horses, with a figure in front, heading for the ford.CHARLES JAMES ADAMS, 1859-1931, was born in Gravesend in Kent. He studied at Leicester School of Art under W. Pilsbury, where he won the Mulready Gold Medal for Life Drawing. He later became a teacher at the school. He was a prolific artist in oil and watercolour, of landscapes, animals, genre and historical subjects. He lived in various parts of the country, including Leicester 1891, Sydenham, London 1895, Horsham Surrey 1897, Billingshurst Sussex, 1900, Midhurst 1901, Guildford Surrey 1904, and Frensham Surrey in 1905.
He exhibited from 1881-1919 at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society, as well as major provincial galleries. There are examples of his work in Brighton and Leicester Art Galleries.
