We are offering for sale this lovely oil on board by the artist J. LOVEGROVE HOLT, who has signed the painting verso and entitled it Caves at Flamborough and dated it 1880. The painting depicts some Victorian tourists being taken by boat through one of the caves at Flamborough at sunset. There is another boat with a mast and with its boatmen sitting waiting at the mouth of the cave.

This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we are currently listing.

Flamborough Head which is situated north of Bridlington on the East Yorkshire coast, are the northernmost chalk cliffs in the UK and contain over 200 sea caves, formed by the action of the waves on the strata of the chalk. This is an area where many different types of seabirds nest, as well as seals and is a wildlife reserve.

J. LOVEGROVE HOLT was a Victorian artist who lived at St. Lawrence on the Isle of Wight, according to a label on one of the old frames that contained the pair. Unfortunately, we can find no other biographical information about him other than this.

The painting has been newly framed in a 2 5/8" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
