Description

We are delighted to offer this large and unusual watercolour of a Jester by the artist WILL HOLT, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The Jester is sitting on a chest, wearing motley, as a Jester's clothing is called, and holding his Marotte or Jester's staff. He is wearing the traditional Fool's hat with three bells on it and his jacket is also belled. He is wearing white stockings with a blue garter.

This is a very well executed and colourful portrait.

We have been unable to find much biographical information about the artist, although in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors Club) there is a listing for Will Holt, who exhibited 1 painting at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 1919. So this may be that painting.

The watercolour has been double mounted in two-tone to complement and is framed in a dull mottled gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
