Description

We are very pleased to offer for sale this lovely and finely executed watercolour by the artist WILLIAM CASLEY, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and inscribed it verso 'Sands at Housel Bay, The Lizard, Cornwall'. The painting depicts a view of a beach at low tide, with rocks jutting out of the sand. There is a steamship out to sea, as well as a sailing vessel. Seagulls are wheeling around the cliffs. The sands of this small bay are completely covered by the sea at high tide, so has to be visited with care.

WILLIAM CASLEY, lived at The Lizard in Cornwall until 1912, when he is listed as living in Liverpool. There is an artist called Leonard Casley, who was living at Pentreath, The Lizard, Cornwall and exhibiting in the 20s and 30s, who may have been his son.

WILLIAM CASLEY exhibited three paintings at the Royal Institute for Painters in Watercolour and three paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. His biographical details are available in The Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.
