We are delighted to offer for sale this large, outstanding Pre Raphaelite oil painting by the artist Constance H. Prince, who has signed the painting C. H. Prince in the lower right hand corner and dated it Aug. 1887.

The painting depicts a lady with flowing red hair, dressed in a very dark blue dress and white blouse and wearing a crucifix, with a prayer book on her lap, appearing to console her friend by putting an arm around her and holding her wrist. Her friend, who has long dark hair, is wearing a pale peach coloured dress with maroon top and a sash. They are seated on a marble bench in a garden, with classocal statues carved into the marble behind them and below the seat. There is a large crucifix on the bench. Ivy is cascading over the top of the bench.

Constance H. Prince, was a Manchester artist, who exhibited 5 paintings at the Manchester City Art Gallery between 1889 and 1911.

She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club) and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child. Unfortunately, we have no further biographical information.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" swept gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
