F.E.Jamieson Oil on Canvas Loch Etive Cattle
Description
We are pleased to offer for auction this large oil on canvas by the artist FRANCIS E. JAMIESON, who has signed for painting in the lower right hand corner with his pseudonym STANLEY GRAHAM and entitled it verso on the stretcher 'Loch Etive'. The painting depicts a small herd of Highland cattle watering in a pool on the edge of Loch Etive. To those of you who are familiar with the work of this prolific artist, as we are, having sold over 50 of his paintings, this is indisputably his work, although we have only encountered this pseudonym once before and that was another scene with Highland cattle. We will not bore you with a repetition of the only written knowledge of this artist, in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents', which, if you have not read it before, you may read on one of our other Jamieson listings. However, apart from the palette and technique used, we will put forward our other reasons for stating that this painting is by F.E.J. He was well known to use many pseudonyms, often using actual artists' surnames and changing the initial eg. A de Perrin, Arnould Pienne and in this case, using two Christian names that he had previously used Stanley (Penn) Graham (Williams).
We therefore assert that, along with the very well known pseudonyms of W. Richards, H.B. Davis, A. de Perrin, Arnould Pienne, P. Arnould, Graham Williams, Aubrey Ramus, Montgomery Ansell, Henry Stewart, Walter Lewis, Phil-Hipps, C. Frater, Stanley Penn, J & G. McGregor, possibly Barber, A. Lewis, and J. Brill, he also used Henry Cooper, Joel Owen, H. James, J. H. Boel, D. Hicks and Stanley Graham. It has also been suggested that F. Walters is another pseudonym of F.E.J. but we are unsure of this. If you look at examples of the work of these artists, as we have, you will come across well known scenes identical to those executed and signed by F.E.Jamieson.
Apart from the auction listings for F.E.J. and his other pseudonyms, we have found a few under the name of Stanley Graham, mostly of highland scenes with cattle. There are 7 listing at findartinfo, 3 each at artprice and artnet and 1 at askart.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 3/4" swept gilt frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
