We are delighted to offer for sale this superb, exhibited oil on canvas by the renowned Scottish painter POLLOK SINCLAIR NISBET, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting also bears a Dundee Fine Art Exhibition label and a label in the artist's own hand, which reads as followsNo. 1 Staircase, Burgos Cathedral

This painting depicts the right hand half of the Golden Staircase at Burgos Cathedral in Spain, with a member of the clergy descending the stairs, reading from a small book. It was built in 1523 by Diego de Siloe and is in the north transept of the Cathedral. The gilt iron balustrade is by Master Hilario. There are many photographs of this staircase on google images.
POLLOK SINCLAIR NISBET, was born in Edinburgh in 1848 and was the elder brother of Robert Buchan Nisbet, another well listed artist. He painted landscapes and town scenes in oil and watercolour. He travelled widely in Italy, Spain, Morocco and Algeria, and worked in venice in 1873 and c. 1881. He also painted Scottish lochs and glens, but his best works are his paintings of lively Arab or Venetian market places and buildings in the Mediterranean sunlight. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1892 and Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1881. He died in Edinburgh in 1922.
He exhibited 165 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, 119 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, 69 at the Glasgow Institute and 21 at other Galleries. The painting is framed in its original, heavy and ornate 4 3/4" gilt frame and slip, which complement the painting very well. It is ready to hang.

ConditionVery good. There are two small repairs to the canvas, which is clean and taut. The frame is in good condition for its age, with some cracking to the plaster moulding.
