Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely watercolour by the Scottish artist ELLIOT HENRY MARTEN, who flourished between 1886 and 1910 and who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'Rombalds Moor near Ilkley. The painting depicts a view of Rombalds Moor, of which the famous Ilkley Moor is a part, with sheep grazing on the heather and bracken moorland.

ELLIOT HENRY MARTEN was a Scottish watercolourist, who lived in Hawick and painted the Borders, Northumberland and Westmorland, as well as the Lake District and the South Downs. He eventually emigrated to Australia, which is probably why his exhibition career ended in 1901. He exhibited a painting entitled 'Autumn Leaves' at the Royal Academy in 1886, as well as five paintings at the Dudley Gallery. If you put his name into search on the internet, you can see a painting of his of the Chanctonbury Ring. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists, the Dictionary of Victorian Painters, the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists and the Dictionary of Scottish Painters.
