We are offering for sale this tranquil marine oil on board by the artist R. Stephens, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a single funnelled liner arrivng at Liverpool docks. The sun is trying to get through the misty, cloudy sky and is barely reflected in the waters of the Mersey. There is a tug and other shipping in the river. Unfortunately, the label that was on the reverse of the board is no longer there, but we have found another painting by him of Liverpool and the chains and groyns along the edge of the landing stage are identical.

There is a singular lack of biographical information about the artist, but we have discovered at least two other marine paintings by him, one entitled 'Winter afternoon, Liverpool Landing Stage' and another called 'Garthpool approaching the Medway'.

The painting is framed in a 1 3/4" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
