Description

This auction is for a subtly toned watercolour by the artist ANTON PURIGINI, who was working around 1900 and who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it Santa Maria della Salute, Venice in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a distant view of the famous and often painted Church of Santa Maria della Salute, on the left hand side, while on the right there are several sailing vessels and a gondola alongside The Molo outside the Doge's Palace, near the Piazza San Marco. There are several groups of figures on The Molo.

We presume Anton Purigini to be Italian and working around 1900, but we have been unable to trace any further information about him or any firm dates. We know that he painted watercolour scenes of Venice and the Middle East and this painting is one of those. Although we cannot find him in the reference books, his auction results are listed on artnet.com and findartinfo. Eleven watercolours of his were sold at Bonhams in 1991.

The painting has been newly doubled mounted to complement and is framed in its original ornate gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
