Tom Seymour 1844-1904 Oil Loch-An-Eilan Stag
Description
We are offering for sale a lovely oil on canvas by the artist THOMAS (TOM) SEYMOUR, who has signed the painting Tom Seymour in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of Loch-An-Eilan (the loch of the island) with a stag in the centre foreground with his three does to the right. There are birds wheeling in the sky and the mist is just curling around the mountain tops. This loch is about 5 miles fron Aviemore. The location is marked on the stretcher of the painting. This is one of a pair of oils by this artist that we are currently listing.TOM SEYMOUR, as he signs himself, obviously found a ready market for his work without the need to exhibit, because we have found no reference to him in any of the art reference books, which draw their information from exhibition listings. He specialised in landscape and marine works. However, his work comes to the market quite often, as proven by the 120 auction listings on artprice.com, 58 on findartinfo.com and 19 on artnet.com. His works are regularly featured in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and a 30" x 20" painting made £900 at Tennants in North Yorkshire in 2005, a pair of 24" x 16" made £2,600 also at Tennants in 2004 and 6 of his oils were sold in Copenhagan in 2003, the highest realising £1,400. In 2007, a 24" x 16" made £750. His record price for an oil was £5,400 at Christie's in 2005.
The painting is framed in its original ornate gilt frame and slip, which suits it extremely well. It is ready to hang.
