We are pleased to offer for auction this excellent study in watercolour by the British artist NINETTA (NINETH) BUTTERWORTH, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting is a study of a bay horse with a white star and three white socks, wearing a bridle. Horses are notoriously difficult to paint and the artist has captured this one perfectly with her customary skill.

NINETTA BUTTERWORTH S.E.A., was born in 1922 in Jersey and was educated at Jersey College for Girls. After leaving school, she worked in stables as a groom. She moved to Devon where she worked in hunt stables, and rode to hounds herself with the local hunt. This explains her intimate knowledge of the hunting scene, as depicted in two oil paintings by this artist recently listed online for £497 each. She specialised in paintings of horses and dogs, hunting and horse racing scenes. She is entirely self-taught.

In 1951, Fores Gallery in Bond Street started exhibiting her work and from 1955 prints became available. In the late 1950s she became interested in carriage driving and her gouaches of this subject are excellent and were published by Royle as greeting cards. in 1970 she began painting Lippizaners from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, one of which we are delighted to have in our collection. In 1973, she had a one man show at the Fores Gallery. She is a member of The Society of Equestrian Artists and was exhibiting at their exhibitions as recently as 2003.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/2" gilt and wooden frame which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
