Description

We are offering for sale one of a pair of watercolours by the artist D. TEARNE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it under the mount 'The four masted barque Loch Torridon'. The ship's name is also visible on the hull. The painting depicts the ship in full sail on a grey day in moderate seas.

The iron hulled barque 'Loch Torridon' was built near Glasgow in 1881 and, on her maiden voyage in 1882 from Melbourne, via Calcutta, laden with grain, she lost her master, the second officer and three of her crew overboard in heavy seas. This incident was subject to a Board of Trade enquiry in January, 1883 and the full report is available online.

Unfortunately, we have been unable, at this time, to discover any biographical information about the artist, but the painting has been executed in great detail. This ship was also painted by Arthur Royce Bradbury.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 2" swept gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
