Description

We are offering for sale a delightful still life oil on canvas by the artist W.H. who has signed the painting with his monogram and dated it 1867. The painting depicts a view of fruit against a mossy bank with a butterfly, which is painted in exquisite detail. There are two bunches of grapes, an apple and a pear with a tendril of ivy in the centre and some bracken to the right. The butterfly looks very like a Small Tortoiseshell, but we are ready to be corrected by any lepidopterist.

As we only have the monogram to go on, and there are many artists with these initials, we have been unable to discover the full name of the artist, so the painting will have to be judged on its merits.

The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/4" antiqued gilt beaded frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
