Lewis N.Nottage Watercolour Dtd 1908 Park Scene
Description
We are delighted to offer for auction this large, extremely detailed and rare watercolour by the Hampstead artist LEWIS NATHANIEL NOTTAGE, who has signed the painting L.N. Nottage in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1908. The painting was entitled Golders Hill Park, Hampstead, London on the old mount, which was, unfortunately, in poor condition. The painting depicts a view of the park in minute details and must have taken many hours to execute. There are deep herbaceous borders filled with flowers of all colours, an archway covered with flowering climbing plants and a wall surrounding the park to the right hand side. Beyond the wall there are many trees which are beautifully painted. It is possible to recognise a great many varieties of the flowers in the park. There are sunflowers, hollyhocks and lillies, to name but a few.
To quote from Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents' -
'LEWIS NATHANIEL NOTTAGE was a painter in watercolour of figure subjects and landscapes who studied at the Heatherleys School of Art and won the Roy Prize about 1900. Few details survive of his early life although he did travel to Norway where he sketched and painted. His best work was the fine quality genre watercolours of figures in elaborate costumes, often in gardens or interiors, which were painted in the early 1900s. Lewis Nottage lived in Hampstead and seemed to make little attempt either to exhibit his work or sell it. His pictures are not often seen on the market but the quality and subject matter would make then collectable.'
There is an illustration of one of Lewis Nottage's works on Page 113 of this book.
The painting has been newly double mounted to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/2" brushed gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
