Description

This is a beautiful 19th Century Satsuma Table Lamp, that was formerly an oil lamp with a Hinks & Sons Patent Burner and has been converted to electricity. The ivory shade is by the makers of the Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge, etc. TV series lampshades.

The base features two completely different large panels. One panel shows a group of samurai warriors, with the largest figure in the centre resplendent in his fighting costume complete with a sword, while on the reverse is a design of peonies growing in a planter, with cherry blossom above and a bird flying. In between the large panels are smaller oval ones on each side, depicting peonies and a bird. The lamp is seated upon a base very similar to the oriental pierced wooden ones with feet that vases are placed upon, except this one is in brass, with an overhanging pierced brass frieze and cap below the burner.

Satsuma ware (薩摩焼, Satsuma-yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery originally from Satsuma Province, southern Kyūshū. Today, it can be divided into two distinct categories: the original plain dark clay early Satsuma (古薩摩, Ko-Satsuma) made in Satsuma from around 1600, and the elaborately decorated export Satsuma (京薩摩, Kyō-Satsuma) ivory-bodied pieces which began to be produced in the nineteenth century in various Japanese cities. By adapting their gilded polychromatic enamel overglaze designs to appeal to the tastes of western consumers, manufacturers of the latter made Satsuma ware one of the most recognized and profitable export products of Japan for centuries, and even became one of the key sources of funding for the Meiji period reforms.

The Shade is in the Maia style in cream moire silk, has cream fringe with beaded overlay and is trimmed with a matching cream braid.

The lamp has been rewired with gold coloured, fabric covered, braided flex and has a new safer switched lampholder, and new 3 amp plug. As with all electrical items, it is recommended that it be checked by a qualified electrician before use.
