Description

This is a watercolour by the artist D. TEARNE, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a tea clipper, which could well be the Cutty Sark, as the gold markings on the bow look very like those on that ship, but we cannot be certain, as the artist has not inscribed this painting. The ship is sailing under full sail, into fairly heavy seas.

The Cutty Sark is a famous tea clipper, which was badly damaged by fire, but is undergoing a programme of full restoration and is moored at Greenwich on the Thames in London.

Unfortunately, we have been unable, at this time, to discover any biographical information about the artist, but the painting has been executed in great detail. We have received information that he is called David Tearne and his is from New York and was born circa 1920. We also heard from someone else who said that he was a young student. However searches of genealogical records have not proved either of these options, so his identity will have to remain a mystery.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 2" swept gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
