We are offering for sale a very finely detailed large watercolour by the Victorian artist CHARLES M. MCARTHUR, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1889. The painting depicts a rural landscape scene with a stone bridge over a small stream which gushes over the rocks below the bridge. There is a haycart crossing the bridge, with the white horse being led by a man, with another figure behind. In the foreground, on the left bank of the stream, there are four sheep, with red dye marks on their fleeces.

CHARLES M. MCARTHUR, who was active between 1860 until at least 1880, was a Nottingham artist, who lived partly in London, but lived in Ilkley between 1882 and 1892. He painted landscapes in both oil and watercolours. His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood,The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child.

His London exhibitions feature in Graves Dictionary, where he exhibited 2 paintings at the Royal Academy and four at Suffolk Street. He also exhibited in the North of England. Examples of his work may be found at Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery and Accrington Museum.

The painting is mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 1" painted wooden frame with gilt edge to suit.
