Description

We are very pleased to offer for sale this atmospheric oil on board by the artist GUDRUN SIBBONS, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a Dutch estuary scene, with cargo being unloaded from a typical rounded Dutch barge. There is shipping on the water, buildings and a church to the right hand side and a windmill in the distance. This painting features one of the artist's typical dramatic skies, with the sun hidden behind a cloud and shafts of sunlight breaking through.

This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we will be listing.

GUDRUN SIBBONS was born in 1925 in Annaberg in Silesia, Germany. Her studies took her to Berlin, Breslau and Hamburg, when WWII intervened and during this period, she served as a nurse. After the war, she was working as a secretary, when she met her future husband Bill Sibbons, a professional portrait painter. They moved to London and married in 1949. She worked as a laboratory assistant, whilst painting as a hobby.

She started selling her paintings on the Hyde Park railings in the 1950s and, after selling paintings to such famous people as David Niven and Erroll Flynn, became an instant success and her paintings have attracted much interest and high prices ever since. She now lives on the south coast.

Her paintings are in oils and she specialises in landscapes and coastal scenes in the Dutch old master style, with powerful skies reminiscent of Turner.
