Gordon Brown b. 1888 Still Life Oil Rhododendrons
Description
We are offering for sale this very attractive still Life oil on canvas by the artist Sydney Gordon Brown, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner, and entitled it verso on the stretcher 'Rhododendrons'. Also on the stretcher is written, also in pencil, Gordon Brown, Ferry Side, Llangwm, Haverfordwest. We think that this may be a holiday address, where the painting was executed, as we do not believe that the artist lived in Wales. The painting depicts a wicker basket with a handle containing pink and white rhododendronsSydney Gordon Brown, who seemed to prefer being known as Gordon or S. Gordon Brown, was born on 27th January 1888, the son of an artist called George Brown. We know this from his marriage record in 1916, where he married Phillis May Stephenson, (born 1892), at St. Michael's Church, Maidstone Kent, on 20th April. We have been unable to trace his father, as it is almost impossible with a surname so numerous of Brown. There are several G. Browns in our reference book, but we did find an S. G. Brown, who exhibited 1 painting at the Royal Academy in 1914, which is probably S. Gordon.
Sydney Gordon was a Lieutenant in the Worcestershire Regiment in WWI, transferring to the Toyal Flying Corps, then to the Royal Air Force. By 1921, he was listed in the 1921 Register as a Textile Designer, living in Richmond, Surrey with Phyllis and 2 children.
In the 1929 Register, he was still listed as a Textile Designer for cotton printing and weaving and was living at Fig Street House, Oak Lane, Sevenoaks, Kent. He was also a Special Constable in WW2, which makes sense due his previous deplloyment during WWI. His wife Phyllis died in 1960, but we have been unable to ascertain his exact date of death.
We have found three of his flower paintings that have been to auction in recent years.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/8 inchmottled gilt frame too suit. I will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire, and will be ready to hang.
