Douglas Cameron Large Oil Highland Sunset & Cattle
Description
We are offering for sale this large and beautifully executed Scottish landscape with cattle, by the artist Douglas Cameron, who has signed the painting in full to the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a Highland sunset over a loch, with low hills to the background, with a small herd of seven shaggy highland cattle of various colours, either watering or walking along the edge of the waters.Douglas Cameron, as far as we can tell, didn't exhibit his work, as no biographical information exists for him in any of our reference books, either that, or his name is a pseudonym. We have seen two dates given for him online, either 1875-1925, or 1837-1916, but that latter date is for an artist called Duncan Cameron, who painted Scottish seascapes, landscapes, particularly cornfields and signed his work D. Cameron. As the name Douglas Cameron is very common in Scotland, and having no accurate dates for him, we have been unable to trace him. None of the about 40 listed works by this artist that have been sold at auction give any accurate dates, they all say late 19th, early 20th Century, flourishing 1880-1910.
We can, however, date the canvas by the stencil mark on the reverse, which proves that it was made by Reeves & Sons between 1896 and 1916 and is a B quality pure flax canvas.
The painting has been newly framed in a 4 inch bronze/gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
