Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this very well executed Still Life Watercolour by the artist M. J. W., who has initialled the work in the lower right hand corner as shown and dated it 1891. The embossed (ESK) blind stamp 'Examined School of South Kensington' to the lower left was the official stamp of the South Kensington Art School, now the Royal College of Art and means that the artist was a student at that institution. We have, unfortunately, been unable to further identify him or her.

The painting depicts a turquoise narrow necked vase containing bullrushes, grasses and honesty, standing n front of a rattan fan, with a nautilus shell below. There is a small, green glazed, earthenware jardiniere to the left with an ochre frilly rim, below a draped curtain of cream, navy blue and orange fabric. Between the shell and the fan is another piece of grass and two pampas grasses.

The painting has not been mounted due to its size, but has been newly glazed and framed in a 1 7/16th inch frame in flat black with bronze inner and outer edges, chosen to echo the curtain.
