Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this dramatic and very well executed watercolour by the Kentish artist Christopher Jarvis, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso 'Cool Jazz'.. The painting depicts a jazz trio performing under lights and the artist catches the mood and movement perfectly. He had drawn upon his own experience as a professional drummer in the pop scene of the 1960s, where he performed with The Beatles and Dusty Springfield.

Chris Jarvis was born in Bromley, Kent in 1943. He spent his childhood in Pratts Bottom, Kent, and on leaving school went into the family building business. He was always interested in art, but as a teenager became very involved in the professional pop scene of the 60s and later ran a successful band of his own. SAbout 1980, he bagan to paint more seriously and in 1988 became a full-time artist in both oils and watercolours.

Chris's grandfather was a wheelwright and this could explain his keen interest in old farming implements and machines. He has a great love for the countryside, and so it is not surprising that scenes of rural England and Victorian farming life form such a large part of his portfolio, although these days his broad subject matter also extends to marines, harbour views, jazz and musical scenes.

For three years, Chris held very successful exhibitions at the Elan Arts Centre, Ide Hill, Sevenoaks. Since 1991 he has also exhibited succssfully at the Francis Iles Gallery, Rochester, and was a featured artist in their Spring 1993 and Summer 1994, Exhibitions. Additionally he has a close association with The Studio Otford, and the Churchill Gallery, Westerham, who also held an Exhibition for Chris in April 1993. Nicholas Bowlby, as water colour specialist, moved to Tunbridge Wells in 1993, and a selection of Chriss work is hung in his new gallery in Castle Street.

Rosenstiels published four images of Chris's work as lImited Edition prints early in 1994. Following their success, further sets of Limited Edition prints were published in the same year.

In 1998, Chris moved to Rochester in Kent, an historic town on the Medway and his lived there ever since. To view more images of his work, please view his own website.
