Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this very well executed waist length oil on canvas Portrait of a well dressed gentleman sporting wide mutton chop whiskers. He has warm brown hair, is well built and is probably in his forties. He is wearing a cravat, held in place by a cravat pin, over a white shirt, under a pale grey double-breasted waistcoat, adorned with a gold watch and chain, under a black long jacket or coat. The portrait is by an unknown artist.

We have dated the painting by the appearance of the sitter, as there is no canvas stamp to go by, as it had been historically relined and the painting was unframed. The advent of mutton chop whiskers at the beginning of the 1870s was a pointer. However, although unsigned, the artist was very gifted as a portraitist and the quality of their work is self-evident. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the identity of the subject.

The painting has been newly framed in a 5 inch dark gold frame and gilt slip to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
