Description

We are offering this very attractive Prussian Portrait Oil on Canvas of a very attractive young lady, seated in a mahogany chair with semi circular back, upholstered on the inside in deep pink velvet. She has her auburn hair parted in the centre and curved back in a fashionable 1840s style, ornamented with a pale pink camellia to one side. She is wearing an off the shoulder evening dress in a creamy shell pink with a frilled neckline and lace edged sleeves, a tight bodice terminating in a v at the front and a full skirt. Her decolletage is ornamented by a gold necklace with central jewelled motif with either a pearl or diamond drop. She has matching tear drop shaped earrings.

We have attributed the painting as Prussian, because of the vestiges of old newsprint which is stuck to the back of the old frame and is obviously in German. We have looked for a date on the newspaper scraps, but, unfortunately, we cannot find one. However, the hair and dress of the sitter are correct for the 1840s period. The painting is unsigned.

As the old frame was past repair and falling apart, the painting has been reframed in a 3" gilt frame, which tones well with her necklace.
