We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful mouth blown glass bird designed by Professor Oiva Toikka for Iittala of Finland. The bird is a Spotted Crake, which was introduced to the bird collection in 2001, and is signed on the base O. Toikka Nuutajarvi. It has a clear glass head, and in colouration has mottled shades of ochre, into pale blue and then green over amber glass, as shown. It comes with its original box This bird has been retired.

The Nuutajarvi Glass Blowing Village was founded in 1793, and it is here that the Oiva Toikka glass birds were made for forty years. However, Nuutajarvi merged with Iittala in 1988 and production of the birds moved to the main Iittala site in 2014.

Oiva Toikka (1931`-2019) was made an honorary Professor of the Arts by the State of Finland in 1993. He also won several prestigious awards, including the Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal. He started designing the beautiful Oiva Toikka range of birds in 1972, and the range has grown ever since.
