We are pleased to offer for sale this unusual Victorian Wall Light, which has a swivelling arm and is fitted with its original green Vaseline Glass shade. It was manufactured to take gas, hence the tap fitting, but has since been converted to electricity. The backplate bears the impressed mark VERITYS, which means that it was made by the firm of B. Verity & Sons, of Covent Garden, London, whose works moved to Aston, Birmingham in 1891. In 1896, the firm became Verily's Ltd. and became an early maker of electrical lighting for the home, as well as electric fans etc.

The light has a square backplace with dot and dart detailing and has four screw holes to fix the plate to the wall. From the back plate there is an ornate socle, followed by the gas tap. Beyond this is the swivel or rotating junction, from which emanates the first square brass arm, which culminates in another swivel mechanism, then the final square arm, which curves upward into the fitting and shade.

The shade is in green glass, with a band of vaseline glass around the frilly rim.

The lamp has been recently wired with modern wiring, but we have replaced the fitting with a safer switched BC lampholder. As with all electrical items, it is recommended that it be checked by a qualified electrician upon installation.
