Description

We are offering for sale this pair of very attractive 19th Century Bronze and Rouge Marble Urns and removable Covers. The urns are beautifully and finely cast and bear raised images of classical figures in a Bacchanalian scenario. The covers bear grapes and bulrushes around the rim, and the surmounts bear bunches of grapes on one side, and some hops on the other. We believe that the male figure holding the cornucopia is Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, agriculture and fertility. surounded by putti and female attendants, one holding a goblet and leaning on an amphora. There are bulrushes and grape vines in the background and the handles or the urns are made of flowering plants. The bases of the urns also bear flowers and foliage. They are located on top of circular, stepped, rouge marble bases and are very heavy, being bronze rather than brass and untarnished. The urns are baized to protect surfaces.
