Description

We are offering for sale this very large moonlit landscape watercolour by the talented Scottish artist Pollok Sinclair Nisbet, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner Pollok S. Nisbet A.R.S.A. The addition of the A.R.S.A. dates the wtercolour to after 1892, when he was elected. The painting depicts a tranquil view of a loch, with a punt pulled up on the bank to the left and some sheep resting in a field, bordered by a dry stone wall. The moon is visible through the clouds and is reflecting in the water.

POLLOK SINCLAIR NISBET, was born in Edinburgh and was the elder brother of Robert Buchan Nisbet, another well listed artist. He painted landscapes and town scenes in oil and watercolour. He travelled widely in Italy, Spain, Morocco and Algeria, and worked in Nenice in 1873 and c. 1881. He also painted Scottish lochs and glens, but his best works are his paintings of lively Arab or Venetian market places and buildings in the Mediterranean sunlight. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1892 and Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1881. He died in Edinburgh in 1922. We have learned that sadly he lost his son in Belgium on June 2nd 1916 during WWI.

He exhibited 165 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, 119 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, 69 at the Glasgow Institute and 21 at other Galleries. Auction results and examples of the work by this artist, may be found at artprice.com (113 listings), artnet.com (70+) and arcadja.com (75).
