Description

We are offering for sale this lovely 19th Century Porcelain Japanese Saiko-Kutani Vase, previously converted into a Table Lamp with pleated Shade.

Kutani ware (九谷焼, Kutani-yaki) is a style of Japanese porcelain traditionally supposed to be from Kutani, now a part of Kaga, Ishikawa, in the former Kaga Province. It is divided into two phases: Ko-Kutani (old Kutani), from the 17th and early 18th centuries, and Saikō-Kutani from the revived production in the 19th century. The more prestigious Ko-Kutani wares are recognised by scholars to be a complex and much mis-represented group, very often not from Kutani at all.
The base is of baluster form and is decorated with landscapes and figures. It has twin, twisted reeded handles in brass, with a substantial and ornate Victorian brass base.

The pleated, coolie shaped shade is in oyster coloured faux silk and tones well with the lamp base.

The lamp has been completely rewired with pale gold coloured braided fabric covered flex, and has a new lampholder and plug. As with all electrical items it is recommended that it be checked by a qualified electrician before use.

Height to top of shade: 20" - 50.8cm

Diameter of shade: 14" - 35.55cm

Diameter of base: 4 3/4" - 12cm

Condition: Very good. There is no damage to the base, other than slight wear to the gilding in the middle of the most bulbous part of the base, due to handling. The shade is new.
