Description

We are offering for sale this early piece of Mdina glass, which is a blown glass oval vase in sea green tones, bearing the signature yellow streaks and incised signature Mdina on the base, as well as its original label. The sea green vase is encased in clear glass applied 'wings' to each side, which continue and join to form the base.

Mdina Glass was formed in Malta in 1968 by Michael Harris and Eric Gibbons. Michael Harris left the company in 1972 and in 1975 Joseph Said joined the company and in 1985 became the owner. He now runs the company with the help of his son and three daughters. Two Italian Maestros were brought over to Malta to assist with training and the company has continued to be in the forefront of glassmaking, with the inclusion of lampwork and new fusion techniques.

The early pieces of Mdina reflected the colours of the sea and rocks around Malta and some of their pieces bear the George Cross of Malta, as does the label on this vase.
